Meet Abena Osei-Poku; new chairman of the Ghana Stock Exchange Board
Abena Osei-Poku succeeds Mr. Ray Anselm Sowah, whose mandate ended at the last annual general meeting held on July 28, 2021.
As one of three independent Board members representing associate members, Abena Osei-Poku is also Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana – a systemically important player in the Ghanaian economy.
Abena Osei-Poku is credited with leading Barclays’ successful transition from a “century-old home brand” to Absa.
She is responsible for charting a transformational direction for the bank and anchoring the new brand among key clients, clients and all stakeholders. Previously, she worked at Absa Group in South Africa as Managing Director responsible for corporate and investment banking activities in East and West Africa.
As a leader with high ambition, Abena combines an effective commitment to high financial performance and social good. She has over 27 years of Pan-African experience at Standard Chartered and Barclays Bank with various leadership roles in risk management, corporate governance, corporate management, strategy, client coverage and change management. .
She has extensive experience on boards of directors having previously served on boards of directors in the telecommunications, banking, commerce and hospitality sectors. She is currently Chair of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana. In addition, she sits on other executive forums and is an honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and an honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana.
Abena Osei-Poku is an alumnus of the University of Ghana Legon and holds an MBA from Manchester Business School in the UK. She has participated in various leadership programs and other programs around the world. She is fluent in English with a working knowledge of French.
