A French Muslim teenager, who was assaulted by two men with a cutter for wearing a veil, attempted to kill herself.

The 16-year-old is believed to be in critical condition in hospital after jumping out of the fourth-floor window of her home in Trappes, Paris yesterday.

Although her motives for suicide remain unclear, she also reportedly tried unsuccessfully to overdose on pills last week, according to French newspaper Le Parisien.

In July, hundreds of Muslim protesters clashed with riot police in the Paris suburbs after attempts were made to fine a woman who wore a full Islamic veil.

Since the controversial burqa ban that was introduced across France in 2011, there have been a series of violent incidents across the country.

Fearful that the girl’s suicide attempt could spark further riots, police were stationed in the suburban town west of the French capital on Monday evening, but no disorder emerged.

The girl told police that on August 12, she was approached by two men of “European appearance” with shaved heads near Square Berlioz as she was leaving a friend’s house at 5:45 pm.

The men allegedly shouted anti-Muslim and racist remarks at him before brandishing a cutter. They ripped off her veil, pushed her and hit her.

She said The Huffington Post: ‘The first man started to touch my chest and then I managed to slap him, but then he punched me in the chest. He then took out a sharp object and started slicing my face with short, quick movements.

His attackers fled in a car when another man intervened. Le Parisien newspaper reported that she had “slight scratches” on her throat and face.

Yveslines Police are currently investigating the attack and looking at CCTV footage, but are struggling as no eyewitnesses to the attack have come forward.

It is not known whether the teenager was wearing a hijab (headscarf) or a niqab (full veil) which is now banned under the French burqa ban. Women convicted of wearing veils covering their faces in public can be fined the equivalent of £ 130 and be forced to attend citizenship courses.

During the riots in July, hundreds of people surrounded the police headquarters in the area and pelted the police with stones while starting fires and vandalizing property.

At the time of the attack on the young girl, the French Minister of the Interior, Manuel Valls, declared: “I severely condemn this new manifestation of anti-Muslim hatred and intolerance”.

During the riots in Trappes in July, hundreds of people surrounded the region’s police headquarters and pelted the police with stones as they set fires and ransacked property.

A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured in the eye in the violence, while four police officers were injured on Saturday, local prosecutor Vincent Lesclous said.

A police source in Trappes said: “The unrest is linked to the arrest of a man who opposed the control of his wife for wearing the veil.

“He attacked officers and was then arrested. This is what led to the demonstrations in front of the police headquarters in Trappes.

A 21-year-old pregnant woman was also assaulted by suspected vigilantes for covering her face with a veil in the same area.

In March, a Frenchman who tore the veil off a Muslim woman was given a five-month suspended prison sentence.

The 30-year-old said he was simply trying to “enforce” the laws of his country when he carried out the attack in the city of Nantes.
